Description - The Greenwich Hotel
Robert De Niro's Greenwich Hotel sits resplendent - all brick and glass and wrought-iron - between Franklin and North Moore Streets in Manhattan's Tribeca neighborhood. This lavishly appointed, European-style guesthouse was erected on the site of a car park, overlooked by De Niro's Tribeca office, and is one of the most stunningly integrated buildings to emerge in Tribeca in years. The weathered dignity achieved by its eight floors of hand-cut bricks and 30-foot atelier windows harks back to the days when the neighborhood really was the cobblestoned domain of Beatniks and industrial workers.
Upon entering the hotel, it is clear that 'home away from home' was the key objective. Some even say, it feels like the holiday residence of a well-travelled friend: eclectic and seasoned. Many elements have been reclaimed, handmade, or rediscovered, from the rustic factory beams in the lobby's ceiling to the guestroom doors to the tarnished glass taken from the city's iconic Flatiron Building in the dining room and stairwell. The Drawing Room features vintage furniture from the St.-Ouen flea market in Paris. The Shibui Spa features a small, lantern-lit pool that runs beneath a 250-year-old Japanese pine farmhouse transported from Kyoto. This farmhouse, erected without the use of a single nail or screw, lends a peaceful mood to the space. De Niro also adds a personal touch to the Greenwich Hotel, as several of his father's paintings hang throughout.
The Greenwich is home to New York's outpost of Ago. The menu focuses on Italian-style fare, offering menu items such as homemade pasta and risotto, salads and pizzas, and an exceptional selection of fish and meat. In keeping with the neighborhood surroundings, the restaurant features exposed brick walls and hand-finished wood paneling. For dining in the privacy of your own room, 24 hour room service is offered for your convenience.
