Morgans Hotel New York is located in the heart of Manhattan, close to the renowned shopping of Fifth Avenue and the legendary Times Square, and is just 3 blocks from the Empire State Building. Morgans is the hotel that changed all the rules. From the moment it opened its doors on Madison Avenue, it startled the world with a convention-shattering attitude and distinctive design sensibility. This grand experiment in style was concocted by legendary designer Andrée Putman, whose projects have ranged from boutiques for Yves Saint Laurent and Thierry Mugler, to the Guggenheim Museum and Peter Greenaway movie sets. Several of Putman’s additions created for the 2008 renovation are unmistakably 21st-century. One is an overhead LED display made by Trafik, a French graphic and installation design team. Spanning the entire ceiling in the lobby, it projects moving patterns and colors like an enormous screen saver. A techie-gizmo installation may seem like an unlikely crown jewel from such an august designer, but, in Putman’s mind, 'timeless' - a word often applied to her work - doesn’t mean boring. 'I can’t imagine doing a modest little lobby that doesn’t make an impression,' she says.
The Living Room has been re-done and upgraded with a high-tech business center. Morgans signature restaurant, Asia de Cuba, continues to create a culinary and social buzz. In a soaring, theatrical space, restaurateur Jeffrey Chodorow’s dynamic menu blends Latin and Asian cuisine with stunning results.
